While big firms led the growth of Japanese silk reeling industrybefore the second world war, medium and small-sized firms accountedfor the larger part of the industry. The reason why those smaller firmscould survive, however, has not been inquired in detail. According to thecase study in this paper, medium and small-sized businesses in theindustry became stabler around the 1900s, mainly because of theexpanded domestic market for their products and the matured localfinancial market.
