Second language (L2) errors are generally divided into superficial and ambiguous categories. Rather than systematic analysis, errors could better be divided into mechanical errors which are called errors of acceptability, and cultural errors which are called errors of appropriateness. It is also apparent that in essay correction students tend to notice acceptability errors and ignore appropriateness errors. In order to demonstrate this hypothesis and offer a solution, I ran an experiment wherein one student received classic corrections. (She was the control subject who represents a baseline from which to judge deviation from the norm, while the other receives correction separated into the two categories, (she was the experimental subject used to test the hypothesis.) Despite certain difficulties the results are promising.
