Ship pollution-control requires a reduction of diesel exhaust gas and for that purpose new exhaust control systems are currently under development. The seawater scrubber is an effective system to reduce SOx and particulate matter from exhaust gases. Particulate matter and unburned fuel oil, which ends up in the seawater used in this system (scrubbing water) must be cleaned before being discharged into the sea, in accordance with the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships MARPOL 73/78 Annex I. As a new and cheap way to clean discharge water a coffee-based powder activated carbon (PAC) filter was studied. The first experiment using PAC adsorption was to reduce oil in water concentrations from 200mg/l. Comparing the results obtained by PAC with results from zeolite adsorption it was concluded that higher adsorption was achieved using PAC material. The next step in the experiment was analyzed the scrubbing water for oil concentration and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs). The level of PAHs in the scrubbing water was quite high. Concentrations of PAHs were measured before and after PAC adsorption filter treatment.
