In this report we target to reconfirm what characterization is given for traditional craft objects which are regarded to be central materials in the Commodity Museum. Basically, in the Commodity Museum, traditional craft objects are defined to be not objects of fine art, but industrial products and household articles to be used in daily life. Traditional manufacturing techniques of Japanese traditional crafts have been contrived to be preserved by the Protection Law of Cultural Treasures and those traditional crafts continue to be produced as household articles for daily use. But, it is also true that some changes have been added in its traditional manufacturing techniques in order to maintain functions as household articles. These two circumstances can not be compatible fundamentally and have reverse characters each other. However, both of them belong to the Japanese traditional culture, constituting software and hardware of traditional crafts. In this report I have examined the following contents regarding reconfirmation of formation of basic ideas and some reports on actual situation related with a purpose of maintaining traditional crafts as one of Japanese cultures:・Definitions of "Traditional crafts"・A summary on present situation of Japanese traditional crafts industry・Present situation on continuance of manual arts/crafts and introduction of mechanical process・Problems on changes of life style in recent years・Formation of basic ideas by individuals and groups on the manufacturing of traditional crafts in the 20th century・Correspondence of manufacturers in producing center to meet needs in new era
