Examining nearly 4,000 Japanese newspaper editorials published during the last quarter century, this study identifies more than three hundred variations of taikoku [major power] expressions. The annual trend of various expressions belonging to the category of "economic power" was found to be closely related to the Tokyo stock market index. Employing computerized content analytical techniques, the author shows each paper's general evaluative tendency towards four nations, Japan, the United States, China, and Russia (the Soviet Union), as well as the United Nations. The author argues that the research techniques employed in this study successfully demonstrated their usability and effectiveness for studying various aspects of mass-media contents.
