Maori, the indigenous people of New Zealand, have changed their social, political, economical characteristics since the first contact with European people in the eighteenth century. New Zealand is a multi-national state such as Australia and South Africa made up of the indigenous people and European people. Unlike the two countries, New Zealand has maintained coexistent ethnic relations. This relation was based on The Treaty of Waitangi, concluded with the King of Britain and chiefs of the Maori tribe in 1840. The Treaty consists of three provisions which are that the King of Britain hold the sovereignty over New Zealand and the preemption of the land, and protect the right of property to the Maori people. However, the inequality between the Maori people and the European people has become obvious in recent years. The government was obliged to adopt the policy of restoration of the Maori land rights, fishery rights and others. After the WW II, the Maori people moved to urban areas from their original tribal society in various places and mix parentage has advanced more and more. As a result, it became difficult to distinguish who was the subject of compensations. Recently the Maori people have been afraid that they have become one of the minorities in the country because of the increase of immigration from Polynesian and eastern Asian countries to New Zealand.
