Trillium apetalon MAKINO is widely distributed in Japan. The floral organs of this species are consisted of three sepals, six stamens and three capels forming an ovary (Fig. 1.). A petal is absent in the flower. The present author and Y. Kozuka found the petalous plants which is related to T. apetalon MAKING at Zenibako-touge, Hokkaido in June 15, 1957 (Figs. 2. and 22.). After three years' transplanted examination, its uniqueness of the morphological and genetical characters was recognized. This plant (Touge Enreiso) is morphologically similar to T. erectum LINN. of North America in the shape and color of the petals, and in the ratio of the length of the anthers to the filaments (Figs. 3.-11.). In addition, the floral diagram of Touge Enreiso is the same with that of T. erectum LINN. and T. smallii MAX. (Figs. 12.-15.). However, Touge Enreiso is, on the other side, similar to T. apetalon MAKINO in the shape of the capels, and in the ratio of the length of the pistils to the stamens (Figs. 8.-11.). As a result of chromosome analysis, Touge Enreiso has the same number (2n=20) with that of T. apetalon MAKINO (Fig. 16.). But the former differ shaply from the latter in the chromosome C, D, and E (Figs. 17. and 18.). It was recognized that the close relationship exists between Touge Enreiso and T. erectum LINN. from the resemblance of chromosome C of the former to chromosome Ci of the latter (Figs. 18., 20. and 21.). On the basis of the comparative analysis of floral organs and chromosomes as described above, the phylogenetical ralationship among these species may be concluded as follow (Fig. 23.). First, T. smallii MAX. is believed to be phylogeneitcally the most new specific hybrid as the progeny of T. apetalon MAKINO. Secondly, T. apetalon MAKINO is placed ahead of T. smallii MAX. as the parent of the hybrid. Thirdly, T, apetalon MAKINO must be originated from Touge Enreiso, from the similarity in the chromosomes and the external morphology of the floral organs. Prior to Touge Enreiso (the tetraploid species), the diploid species composed of the genome of Touge Enreiso are supposed to occupy the position. It seems that this diploid specis originated from Pre-Trlilium. On the other hand, T. erectum LINN. must be speciated from the Pre-Trillium. This phylogenietcal relationship can be evidenced by the similarity of chromosomes and morphological characters of the floral organs. In conclusion, it is considered that the origin of T. apetalon MAKINO must be common with that of T. erectum LINN. in North America.
