It is almost fifteen years since I began publishing the collections of the words used in Kyogen. The post war society was not well prepared to pay attention to such a kind of work, and the magazines which kindly went to the trouble of publishing my studies have been suspended for a long time. My previous works are: 1. "Studies of the Language in 'Kyogen'" (Ai〜Sanmotsu) in Yokyoku-kai. Feb. 1942〜June 1943. 2. "Studies of the Language in 'Kyogen'" (Ji〜Takoku) in Yokyoku-kai. Aug. 1943〜March 1944. 3. "Vocabulary in 'Kyogen'" (Tashinamu〜Teitaikoto) in Nogaku. Sept. 1945 & March 1946. 4. "Vocabulary in 'Kyogen'" (Teitaraku〜Hashirakasu) in No. Aug. 1952〜Dec. 1953. And also I added another "Studies of the language in 'Kyogen'" to Studies on "Kyogen" published by Fukumura book-store in 1948; contributed to Kojien, a dictionary, from Iwanami, and wrote marginal notes in The Collected Works of "Kyogen" in 3 vols. from Asahi Press in 1956. The main purpose of studying the individual words in "Kyogen" is of course to understand it better, but at the same time, it is an important key to know the historical background of the age which gave birth to "Kyogen". The present texts of "Kyogen" were compiled mostly in so called Modern times except Tensho-bon, and so research on the language itself is indispensable in order to approach to more original texts. Moreover, since "Kyogen" as a theatrical art survived the transitional period between the so called Mediaeval and Modern times of Japan, it has historical importance in Japanese literature and language.
