Kenko (1283-1350), the author of Tsurezuregusa, read one of the Chinese classics Chuang-Tzu at a certain period of his life, perhaps between his thirtieth year and his fiftieth. The clear evidences that he read it are found in the seventh, the thirty-eighth and the ninty-seventh chapters of Tsurezuregusa which was written when he was about 48/9 years old. These evidences show how Kenko was influenced by Chuang-Tzu. Chuang-Tzu is mystical and ethical. Kenko was much interested in its ethical aspect, but he did not understand its fundamental mysticism. Here exists the peculiar way of interpreting Chang-Tzu by Kenko, who was essentially a priest.
