Emerson, who has been generally considered the leader of the Transcendentalist movement, had duality of idealism and Yankeeism in his thought, which can be found even in the fundamental ideas of his Transcendentalism itself. As his pragmatic tendency developed with years, he gradually came down from the summit of mysticism to the highway of everyday life. Maturity of his thought was thus marked by his growing concern with the reality of America as well as with the actual situation of human existence. It was this fine combination of shrewdness of a stalwart Yankee and high idealism of a visionary that made Emerson a unique figure at the formative period of American culture.
