In the prose poetry「野草」"Wild Grass" by Lu Hsun, there are two cantos entitled「復讐」"Revenge". The latter of the two is not only based on the subject matter of the sufferings of Christ on the cross as is found in the Gospel of St. Mark but also quotes many expressions of the same Gospel of a Chinese version. Judging from this point, it can be said that「復讐」"Revenge" No. 2 in the anthology「野草」"Wild Grass" is the description of the sufferer, Christ in Mark. But there is a great difference from the Bible in that its theme is that Christ does not resurrect as the son of God but revenges himself on slaughters, dying as a child of man. Lu Hsun expresses such an opinion on Christ or Christianity in his early essays, too. It has something in common with Nietzsche's view of Christ found in Antichrist or Zarathustra. However, Lu Hsun does not inherit it from Nietzsche. It is his own idea of revenge, which is against old ideas existing in China. By the research into Lu Hsun's ideas of「復讐」"Revenge", I have investigated the thoughts of the modern China as it came in contact with the Western civilization.
