We can observe a remarkable trace of changing vocabulary and syntax in the point of philological transition for about 100 years from Meiji Era to the present. The vocabulary began to contain the increased number of Kango, Chinese-styled words. The syntax has changed from Kanbunkakikudashi or Chinese style to Futsubun or literary style and finally to Genbunicchi or colloquial style. The establishment of the colloquial style caused a great progress of the colloquial words. I have investigated this transition in the point of expression. I have studied comparatively how Kanji, from the 1st to the 50th usage, has been used for a certain expression using the research by the National Language Institute on the Yubinhochi (1877-1878) and 90 modern magazines (1960) and also the study of the Nihonkihonkanji (pb. 1942) by Masao Onishi. From this study I have got the following results: 1. The transition can be seen even in many Kanji which have been used very often. 2. The historical change can be seen between the frequency of the literary expression and that of Chinese expression. 3. After all the above changes can be said a transition towards the modanization of Japan.
