The improvement of turbocharger efficiency gives only slight effect to the thermal efficiency of the diesel engine cycle, because exergy loss increase in other processes than in the turbocharger is inevitable, as long as the turbocharger is used only for supercharging. This paper describes the reason with exergy analysis, and takes another look at the turbocompoud system to take out power with power turbine. The turbocompound system makes it possible to effectively use all of surplus power of the turbine, more than to drive the blower of the turbocharger. The higher the turbocharger efficiency is, the more the output power of power turbine increases and the less the cycle total exergy loss becomes.
