The most important and most ambiguous characteristics of aerofoil are maximum lift and minimum drag. Scale effect and turbulence effect make it quite difficult to obtain the actual value of the two characteristics by wind-tunnel experiments, and yet we have had no method of determinating them theoretically. The proposed method of calculating them in this paper, was gained as a simple application of the boundary layer theory, under a several assumptions which are considered to be valid in the flight conditions. By the two formulae, thus derived, the maximum lift coefficient and minimum profile drag are calculated from pressure distribution around the aerofoil, which is obtained by the potential theory. The calculated results are in good accordance with actual flight results, as examples show.
