When creating video teaching materials for an Intensive Japanese Language Course, it became evident that students need authentic materials including regional factors which are actually found here in Kurume. It was hypothesized that requests which exhibit register change strategies clearly place a form of burden on the other interlocutor. Therefore the actual state of conversation was investigated, looking especially at the request phrase, among Japanese students. The results showed that the students used the dialect term "te kuren?" in conversations with familiar friends, but they used the form to express a wish, "te hoshiinnda yone" or "onegai", when making a more serious request to the same friends. Meanwhile, they did not use the dialect form, but the standard "desu/masu" form when speaking with senior friends. According to the structure of the conversation, the more serious the request, the more the number of turns increased, while adding the reason for the request or an explanation of the situation, which was added even in light requests. They also added the words "onegai ga arundesukedo" before the request phrase, including the apology form "suimasen", which acts as a relief measure against the burden carried by the speakers' partner.
