A Cross-morphemic Comparison of Timing in VVs

This paper presents preliminary results from ongoing experiments designed to clarify the phonetic characteristics of the VV in English and Japanese. It includes three experiments, one presented at the International Congress of Phoneticians of English (November 2005). The focus is mainly on VV timing. Morpheme-internal Japanese sequences such as [ai] have been called "diphthongs," but in most respects they are indistinguishable from dimorphemic VVs. Our data show differences between English morpheme-internal and morpheme-boundary VVs, but no consistent difference between these types in Japanese. This highlights the difference between the English diphthong and the Japanese VV. We discuss the relevance of the VV to language rhythm, the syllable, and language acquisition.
