Abstract A possible generation mechanism of the sideband growth due to a cyclotron resonant interaction between electrons and monochromatic whistler waves is investigated. The trajectories of resonant electrons in the field of whistler waves are obtained by using an approximate Hamiltonian with higher order terms of b = Ω0 / (2ko2 v⊥ τ), where v⊥ is an exact resonant velocity perpendicular to a static magnetic field, τ is a period of oscillation for phase-trapped electrons, and Ω0 is a cyclotron frequency of the electron. The distortion of a velocity distribution function averaged over one spatial period in the resonant region is obtained by trigonometriC expansions of the Jacobian elliptic functions. It is found that the temporal growth rates of sideband generations are enhanced by taking into account the effect of order of b. The subsideband growth due to the secondary distortion of the averaged velocity distribution function is also estimated.
