Women's studies in Japan began in the late 1970s, when there was a common understanding among scholars of women's studies on the object of study and its point of view. It was considered that research methods should be in accordance with those of the various academic fields in which women's studies researchers had trained, and that it was reasonable to employ methods which were effective in solving problems. Consequently, in the early days women's studies was not recognized as an academic field since "something which does not have an independent research method is not condidered academic." In response to this criticism, scholars were of the opinion that seeking methods to have women's studies socially recognized would rather have the effect of limiting the area of women's studies, whose aim was to look at culture and society through women in general and suggest a way of realizing the idea of sexual equality. A further reason why methods were not developed was that scholars were more concerned about the existing situation than about the establishment of an academic field. Today, 10 years later, 24% of higher learning institutions offer classes in women's studies at both undergraduate and graduate level. This paper aims to review the early methods and discuss whether appropriate methods have been developed.
