Abstract This paper deals with a driving and controlling technique of an ultrasonic motor for application to a position controlling device. A personal computer is used for the setting of a rotation angle of the motor and its direction of motion. The rotor begins to move by the electrical input, followed by the drive condition indicated on the display of computer. The controlling technique is as follows: An angular displacement is detected using a rotary encoder and the indicated angular displacement is determined by the output pulse numbers to drive the motor. These actuations resemble to those of an usual stepping motor. Cancelation of an accumulated error by the stepping motion is intended by resetting of a definition of the origin and calculation of a remaining rotation angle in the program whenever a rotor passes through the origin. The ultrasonic motor used in the experiment is driven with two phase pulse signals having π/2 phase differences and 50% duty factors, and the drive and control circuit of motor is constructed with transistor-transistor logic (TTL). Drivings of motor to the clockwise direction and counter-clockwise direction are carried out by changing electrically the input order of two phase signals to an ultrasonic motor. It is found from the experimental results that the driving and controlling of an ultrasonic motor can be achieved easily using the personal computer having the program presented herein and the simple electronic circuit demonstrated.
