• Three points are emphasized in reviewing the literature on illusory contours. First, illusion of surface properties such as apparent contrast or depth stratification should be discussed independently of the contour perception itself. Second, perception of illusory contours should be discussed basically in terms of a stimulus-driven phenomenon although cognitive factors such as set or memory affects perception of illusory contours. Finally, perception of illusory contours should be regarded as shape perception of hidden figures by occlusion, using viewpoint-invariants such as parallel edges or collinear terminators and making probabilistic likelihood estimation. The final point explains some singular aspects of illusory contours, such as specificity of luminance information.
