Defoamation of beames under increasing bending mement from zero to a larger value beyond the so-called clastic limit has been studied theoreticaly using concrete and reinforcing steel of various strengths. It is assumed that steel is perfectly plastic beyond the elastic limit and that concrete possesses inperfect elasticity which may be expressed by an exponential function. (See Eq. (4)) §1-§3 describe the general characteristics of resistance of reinforced concrete beams against bending. §4-§7 pertain to the study of the deformation of beams of various steel percentages. §8 gives the formulas and diagrams for the design of beams. Many theorios on the ultimate strength of reinforced concrete beams have been published in the past, but the auther's method is unique in making possible the analysis of the resisting strength of reinforced concrete beams for entire range from small deformation to ultimate failure. The results obtained from the auther's method explain the experimental observations successfully and these results are also useful in the stress analysis of reinforced concrete frames whose stresses are above the elastic limit. This investigation was performed in the laboratry of Dr. Kiyoshi Muto, professor of Structural Engineering in Tokyo University. (Jan. 1951)
