In adult nursing clinical practice, students have increasingly become in charge of cancer patients, which reflects the recent disease structure. The purpose of this study was to clarify the structure of learning in students in charge of cancer patients based on the results of their self-rating evaluation. Of the students who performed adult nursing practice in fiscal 1998-2000 and gave consent to this study after explanation of the study outline by the researchers, 106, who were in charge of cancer patients, were entered into this study. The students performed self-rating of their practice (30 assessment items, 5-point scale) on 133 patients. The confidence coefficient (Cronbach's alpha) for the assessment items was 0.94. Exploratory factor analysis was performed, and the goodness of fit was evaluated using a covariance structure analysis model. However, there were no differences in the contents of learning among the three treatment methods. The structure of learning in adult nursing practice was evaluated using "specialized nursing practice techniques and abilities", "ability to evaluate the pathologic condition", and " ability to evaluate the developmental state of the subject", which were obtained by exploratory factor analysis, as factors. The correlations among the three factors were high, showing a learning structure with co-variation. The students who were in charge of cancer patients could perform learning by evaluating the whole image of the patients and also by directing their attention to the psychological environment of the patients.
