Many vocal students learn songs out of Stefano Donaudy(1879-1925)'s "36 Arie di stile antico" through their studies. I question why his name is not listed in New Grove's Dictio-nary and M G G. The most difficult problem in singing his graceful melody, is how per-formers will represent his diverse conceptual expressions. Donaudy attached the names of Italian secular vocal music types of the 15th to 17th centuries to the song titles. After viewing individual piece, I was able to find that each piece covers the characteristics of each individual type. When playing the songs of Donaudy, the performer will be at a loss by his precise directions. However, by playing the melody while recognizing the ancient style at its base, we will be able to understand the true meaning in Donaudy s compositions. I am planning to make a more detailed study based on this research. In the end, I am planning to clarify the instructive significance of "36 Arie di stile antico".
