Laparoscopic surgery has many potential applications, and its application in children has recently received attention. Ongoing technical advancement and miniaturization of equipment render laparoscopic corrections of various congenital anomalies in children possible, extending the application of laparoscopy in other surgical procedures. There are several differences in anesthetic care between laparoscopic surgery and other routine open procedures in cardiorespiratory systems of children. Important physiological factors affecting the cardiorespiratory functions include the absorption of CO_2 for insufflation, the CO_2 insufflation-induced increase in intra-abdominal pressure and the patient positioning during surgical procedures. We describe an anesthetic technique that strategically incorporates the patient's underlying cardiorespiratory status and associated medical conditions. With careful intraoperative monitoring of anesthetic management, surgical interventions with limited invasiveness can be applied safely and effectively even in infants.
