What is the meaning of "what is difficult to understand" accompanying poetry, especially modern poetry? Where does the enevitability of the difficulty come from? Does that really originate, aiming at the top level of language? These are the questions when we comprehend modern poetry. As these problems cannot be solved completely, people taking no interest in poetry have been increasing in number with accelerated velocity today. Losing of poetry (verse) originating from ancient times and situated on the root of language means the crisis of language with its hollow causing the collapse of the consciousness (mind) of moderns. At present various diseases concerning nervous or mental system become serious and this has something to do with these matters, I think. Therefore, verifying "what is difficult to understand," I want to clarify the essence of modern poetry. In this main issue, I point out <the inexactness> of realism and I situate the inexact feeling of reality recognized by doing so as modernism (modern science principle). Next, through the views of Masao Kawai, I regard this recognition as the evil of culture, cleaning up the anti-nature attribute and the sense of modeling concealed in modernism. And the situation evading the problems of modernism, namely the equality, <exactness=anti-nature anti-modeling=anti-modernism> is "what exists before one's eyes," which Karatani says and "the shadow" which Yoshimoto demonstrates. Moreover, dealing with the following, I will conclude my thesis. Topology of the consciousness common to Karatani and Yoshimoto is "potentiality" which is said to be unreality regarded with realism, from which "the difficulty to understand" originates in consequence. But "the difficulty to understand" has what is overwhelmingly before one's eyes, and at the same time, as it isn't thoroughly detached form the consciousness, it is neither <the consciousness which is to be understood> nor <the unconsciousness which is not to be perceived.> It is situated on the touching point of the two consciousness, that is to say, the rear of the consciousness. The sensibility at the rear of the consciousness is the very existence of poetry, namely, the sense of poetry. By <the sense of poetry> modern poetry overcomes misunderstanding which is said to be the difficulty to understand and displays its significance by drawing closer to original nature.
