• In the period of the Showa 20s, the description in publications and journalism, "Tibet of Iwate" meant the KITAKAMI mountain country in part of Iwate Prefecture and reflected an awareness of the need for its development. However, after the Showa 30s, the new description "Tibet of Japan" was applied to the entire Iwate Prefecture. It has come to be thought that people coming from Iwate Prefecture grew up in an undeveloped region. The intellectuals in Iwate became angry at this, promoted various reactions in the form of publications and journalism. I think that discriminatory expressions using the term "Tibet" were not entirely correct, but their use was significant in focussing attention on a region considered to have been insufficiently developed.
