The aim of this paper is to investigate (1) techniques to promote a language teacher's understanding of students, (2) how to heighten a language teacher's ability to enhance students' motivation, and (3) effective classroom management. As a result, the following conclusions have been drawn. First, a teacher should understand students' differences and diversity as scientifically and objectively as possible. Therefore, researchers such as Ozdeniz (1996), Reid et al. (1998) and Hyde (2000) have developed practical methods to improve a teacher's understanding of students. Second, a teacher should be more motivated to leach by developing his or her ability of teaching. Richards' (1996) use of teachers' maxims or Medgyes' (1992) positive view of non-NESTs' deficit are very helpful approaches. Third, learner-centered approach which could foster learner flexibility and autonomy should be introduced into classrooms. Methods like Kinsella and Sherak's (1998), Rausch's (2000), Ramburuth's (1998) and Brajcich's (2000) would make good guides. Lastly, mental support is indispensable for enhancing students' intrinsic motivation to learn. Hence a teacher should play the role of facilitator, mediator, and cooperator.
