The objective of this paper is to clarify the effect of thermal environment on human physiological and psychological responses at the beach in summer. Thermal environment at the beach will become very hot by direct solar radiation, diffuse radiation, and reflected radiation in summer. Experiment was carried out in Himaka island located in Aichi Prefecture in August 2002. Fifteen subjects used in this experiment were healthy university students. Measurements of the environmental factors were carried out from 11:00 to 16:00 every hour. The mean radiant temperature was calculated considering the heat gain from the sun. Following findings ware obtained. The air temperature rose and the humidity lowered due to the distance from the waterside. Though the surface temperatures of the ground in shade under the parasol ware about 30℃, the surface temperatures of the ground in sunshine exceeded 50℃ in 13:00. The subjects sensed neither hot nor cold in the shade, and in sunshine the subjects sensed hot and unpleasantness. The standard new effective temperature is suitable index for the evaluation of the thermal environment on the beach in summertime compared with other thermal indices used in this study.
