Early infantile autsm (Kanner syndrome) was established as a clincal entity by Kanner in 1943. Although a number of studies on this syndrome have been performed, its etiology still remains to be resolved. In this study, we compared the behavioral characteristics of the syndrome with those of the organic autistic syndrome and the maternal derivation syndrome, based on the cases observed from 5 to 15 years. This study comprised 10 patients with Kanner syndrome, 10 with the maternal deprivaton syndrome. Clinical observations were analyzed according to Rutter's criteria of behavioral characteristics. 1) The patients with Kanner syndrome, as well as those wth the organic autistic syndrome, exhibited freiquently "disturbance of language" and "obssisive-compulsive phenomena". The difference from the maternal deprivation syndrome was statistically significant. 2) Higher frequency of "stereotyped behavior" was found in both Kanner syndrome and the organic autistic syndrome than in last syndrome, though the difference was not statistically significant. 3) There was no difference in "relationship with people" between all the three syndromes, Kanner syndrome resembles the organic autistic syndrome in behavior pattern to the effect that Kanner syndrome may share biological bases with the organic autistic syndrome.
