• This paper presents a brief history of prehistoric earthenware study in Malaysia, which has evolved from a descriptive nature during the colonial period to a more systematic and scientific approach in recent years. Past and recent studies of prehistoric earthenware in Malaysia had revealed differences in earthenware typology and chronology between mainland Peninsular Malaysia and insular East Malaysia (Sabah & Sarawak). Discussion will be focused on the various types of earthenware found in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak, dating to the Neolithic period, as well as some of the issues and problems on prehistoric earthenware study in Malaysia.
