This paper offers a descriptive and analytical account of Seisuke Yamasaki's production of Measure for Measure in 2005. Special attention is also paid to the ways in which the play was made afresh for a young audience. The account of this production is based on the author's memory with an insight into Yamasaki's dramaturgy given by her personal interview with him. Yamasaki significantly altered the structure of the play without substantial loss or distortion. For example, he transposed the order of the first few scenes in an attempt to make the flow of events clearer. He also made a considerable number of cuts to shorten the playing time. Finally, he introduced modern humor and idioms that might seem out of place in the Shakespearean text, but were designed to appeal to young children. A brief survey of the reception of the play is also given, evaluating the theatrical and literary attitudes towards the play. Yamasaki's production was certainly a success, and this paper concludes that Shakespeare, given a context which can fire their imagination, will be meaningful and fun for Japanese children.
