House-shelterbelts on Iriomotejima-Island in the Ryukyu Islands were investigated with the intention of preserving traditional village landscape characteristic of the southern climate of Japan. This island is situated in the subtropical oceanic climate zone, where repeated typhoons make house-shelterbelts necessary. Together with the coastal line fringed with coral reef, these shelter-belts form an unique local landscape in Japan. However, the materials and structure of house-shelterbelts markedly differ with the history of villages. In all of the older villages, Garcinia subelliptica is the most common species, and coral-reef-block walls are also commonly seen. These trees and walls are not only being the most effective windbreak but also an excellent foil to local landscape. In recent years, most of them have been felled and removed on account of economical development and change in living style. Their disappearance means a serious loss to the traditional local landscape in Japan. In this region, they are also valuable resources for the tourist industry which is becomming more important than agriculture and cattle-breeding. For conservation and restoration planning of house-shelterbelts, the author recommends a traditional dual enclosure which consists of taller hedgerow of Garcinia subelliptica and lower wall of reef-block as the most preferable structure. As there is the limitation of individual or regional efforts, it is necessary to make financial aid from a national viewpoint. And it must be deliberate to imporve a traffic problem by road-widening with the consequent damage to shelterbelts.
