1. The rate of the transpiration and the water absorption of cut flowers were measured as fundamental data for prolonging the life of cut flowers, and the possibility of prolongation of cut flower life was investigated. As the cut flowers cottage pink, California-poppy and dahlia were adopted in the present study. 2. Water absorption of cut flowers was directly influenced by the rate of transpiration, and the covering the transpiring surface reduced the rate of water absorption considerably. 3. Water absorbed ascended rapidly through the xylem, and then permeated into the surrounding tissues. The tissues of the cut surface other than xylem did not absorb the water to the extent to keep the flower in fresh condition. 4. Notwithstanding the amount of water transpired under the constant temperature was practically invariable daily, the amount of water absorbed exceeded that transpired in an earlier stage, then the balance gradually worsened and finally the cut flowers were withered. It was not possible to prolong the life of cut flowers by means of inhibiting the transpiration. Each of the materials used to check the transpiration in this study, such as liquid paraffin, vaselin, or celluloid dissolved in acetone or in amylacetate had more or less fault for its application. 5. Considering from the results of the experiments, the possibility of prolongation of cut flower life may be doubtful by the use of method inhibiting the transpiration only. It may not be effective for this purpose to increase the osmotic pressure of the cut surface tissues. If the problems could be solved to find out a proper covering materials which inhibit excessive transpiration and the feasible method to prevent the overgrowth of bacteria blocking the xylem, the combined application of the two methods would be useful to improve the lasting of cut flowers.
