This paper aims to look into the usage of the discourse marker nanka in junior college students' daily language. The literal meaning of nanka is "some, any, something, anything." However, in junior college students' informal conversation, it indicates turn initiator, filler, and softener, in addition to the original meaning. Surprisingly nanka appears very frequently in their conversation; initially, medially, and finally, and also nanka with stress or unstressed shows different usage. It seems that the discourse marker nanka plays an important role in making the conversation smooth and flowing.
