The concentrations of progesterone (P) and 20a-Hydroxypregn-4-en-3-one (20-OH P) in the ovarian venous blood of rats were determined after the removal of the renal grafted hypophysis or after its regrafting. The concentrations of P and 20-OH P declined to a depressed low level within a day after the graft removal and, for the subsequent two days, these were sustained almost to the same depressed low level. The concentration of P further decreased to undetectable level at the 5th day after the graft removal, but the concentration of 20-OH P, contrary to P, showed unexpected increase from the 3rd to the 5th day after the graft removal. The hypophyseal regrafting to rats from which the graft was once removed induced the increase of both the progestin concentrations, even if the P secretion was once exhausted. It is clear that the once functionary exhausted luteinized ovaries can revive the function and secrete both the progestins, if the sufficient luteotrophic stimulation will be given within at least 5 days.
