(1) The use of maleic hydrazide (MH-30) was tested for controlling the flowering of chrysanthemums with a winter flowering variety 'Branch' as material. The cuttings were set in bed on May 20, 1954, and planted for growth on June 20. (2) As from Sept. 1, four treatments including control (no MH), 0.03%, 0.01% and 0.005% maleic hydrazide, were given five times with an interval of ten days (six times for the 0.01% treatment only), each time to a group of ten plants respectively (the control alone assigned twenty plants), by spraying 300cc. per treatment. An inspection of flowering was conducted every week from Nov. 20 till Dec. 18. (3) A spray containing 0.03% MH resulted in the same effect as of manual pinching with tops suppressed to grow no more. As regards lateral buds, the first to the third ones were subject to control and the fourth was found normal. A spray of 0.01% MH brought about temporary suppression, after which the plants grew as well as the control. The 0.005% treatment did not show a suppressing effect. (4) In the 0.03% MH treatment, which suppressed the top, flowers came out on the fourth shoot 1.7-2.6 weeks later than the control. The Sept. 21 and Oct. 1 sprays containing 0.01% delayed bloom by 1.3-2.0 weeks, but the Oct. 21 spray of the same concentration resulted in a mere 0.6 week delay. Of the 0.005% treatments, the Oct. 11 spray produced the longest delay, 1.7 weeks later than the control. (5) In the control, 0.01% and 0.005% MH treatments, the number of the tubular type was greater or no less than that of the ligulate type. Among the 0.03% treatments, the Sept. 21 and earlier sprays had about the same number of both types or a slightly larger number of the ligulate type, and the later sprays resulted in by far the larger number of the ligulate type.
