The relationship between the light irradiation and sexual maturation of the albumen gland was examined in the snail, Euhadra peliomphala. The snails were kept under the different light conditions for one month. The weight of the albumen gland in the snails kept under the continuous light condition (irradiation group) was 2.5-fold larger than the snails kept under the condition of 14-hr light and 10-hr dark cycle (control group). While the weight of the albumen gland in the snails kept under the continuous dark condition (no irradiation group) was 0.64-fold larger than that of control group. The ratio of the albumen gland weight to the total body weight in irradiation group was 1.7-fold larger than that of control group. And there was no significantly difference about the protein contents of the albumen gland in the snails kept under three different light condition. To confirm the promoting effect of the irradiation, the effects of optic tentacle removal on the albumen gland was also examined. There was no statistical significance on the net weight of the albumen gland in optic tentacle removal. From these results, it could be concluded that the light promotes the sexual maturation of the albumen gland in the sanil, E. peliomphala. The involvement of the optic gland in the reproduction was also suggested.
