The distribution of carbonic anhydrase in the fresh-water mussel (Hyriopsis schlegelii) was investigated manometrically by Roughton-Meldrum's method. The enzyme was present in all tissues, except the blood and the pericardial fluid. The gill showed the highest concentration of the enzyme. The transport system of the carbon dioxide in this bivalve has been discussed on the enzyme activity of the various tissues connected with the morphological structure of them. As a respiratory organ, the gill tissue seems to play an important role in the elimination of the carbon dioxide from the blood.
