A Japanese mitrid, Mitra (Swainsonia) ocellata Swainson had been regarded to be conspecific with M. (Scabricola) incisa Adams & Reeve and M. (Swainsonia) fissurata (Lamarck). However, M. (S.) ocellata should be clearly distinguished from the latter two because of differences in detailed shell morphology. In Japan, M. (S.) ocellata inhabits in sandy or gravely bottom of 20-30m to 70-80m depths from Kii Peninsula south to Okinawa and from Genkai-Nada and Hibiki-Nada to East China Sea. Elsewhere in Japan, it is widely distribtued in the Indian Ocean from Eastern Africa to Northern Australia. M. (S.) incisa has been reported only from East China Sea and Okinawa. M. (S.) fissurata is distributed only in the Indian Ocean but not in Japanese waters. M. (S.) marine, a species reported from East China Sea by Adams (1853), is synonymized with M. (S.) ocellata.
