To the north of old Dali Castle in present day western Yunnan's Dali Bai People's Autonomous Region lies Shengyuan Temple 聖元寺 in the mountainous region of Xizhou-zhen 喜洲鎮. The temple, which was built in the mid-fifteenth century, holds a manuscript entitled Baiguo Yinyou 白国因由 (Origins of the Bai Kingdom), which was authored by the temple's abbot in 1706. According to the source, in the year 615 the Boddhisattva Avalokite svara (Guanyin 観音) appeared in Dali in the guise of a Buddhist monk from India, and after vanquishing a demon that was reeking havoc in the region, Guanyin enthroned Xinuluo 細奴羅 as the founder of the Nanzhao 南詔 Kingdom, converted his subjects to Buddhism, and after the fall of the Nanzhao Kingdom, helped Duan Siping 段思平 to become the first king of Dali kingdom. In the present article, the author takes up Baiguo Yinyou in order to how the Guanyin legend, which is a symbol of the unification of the Nanzhao and Dali Kingdoms, changed and was preserved over time among the Bai people during the Ming and Qing periods. This is because Baiguo Yinyou is the definitive account of the Guanyin legend for the Bai people during those later periods. The significance of Baiguo Yinyou is not that is accurately depicts the spread of Buddhism in Yunnan or any other historical facts. Rather, it is significant because beliefs centered upon the legend as a legitimization of the unification of the region since Nanzhao times were to be preserved among the people of Dali well into Ming times, then during the Qing period, they were consolidated into a general historical image of the kingdom of "Baiguo."
