A design of Quasi-zenith satellite system for Japan area is currently being developed in order to provide better land mobile satellite communication. Quasi-zenith satellite communication is one of the promising solutions to provide broadband Internet over satellite link in urban areas. Meanwhile, TCP is unavoidable when it comes to the Internet. The current research of TCP has been mainly done over GEO, which provide low elevation angle in Japan area. The performance of TCP over GEO is not relatively desirable as the result of satellite channel characteristic. In this paper, we analyze the TCP performance over the quasi-zenith satellite system, which is expected to provide better channel performance than the conventional satellite system. In addition, as the main service to be provided by the new satellite system is centered on urban areas, the discussion of shadowing effects is also included in this work. Land mobile satellite simulation model was modeled and developed for this scenario. Finally, a single-hope throughput performance is presented under shadowing environment.
