Coke oven gas (COG) and coal tar, etc. are by-products generated in the process of dry distillation of coal. COG was commonly used as not only major energy source in ironworks but also town gas. Hightemperature COG, so called hot COG, discharged from coke ovens contains vapor of tar at about 800 degree C. The gas is quenched by spraying aqueous ammonia and coal tar is recovered by an indirect or direct cooler, an electrostatic precipitator, etc. After COG is refined through a desulphurization facility, etc., it is used as fuel for coke ovens, fired heaters in ironworks, and power stations. The recovered coal tar is distilled at another process. The distillate and the tar pitch are used as feed stocks for aromatic chemicals and pitch coke, respectively. Most coke ovens will come to the scheduled plant lives in ten to thirty years. Comprehensive countermeasures for the system consisting of distillation units and coke ovens are expected. On the other hand, effective utilization of heat of the hot COG is a challenge in ironworks. Though hydrogen recovery from the refined COG is a commercial technology, partial oxidation and steam reforming of hydrocarbon including tar vapor in the hot COG is a promising developing technology because of efficient utilization of the heat of the hot COG.
