Many tombs with arrangements of stones have been excavated from sites of the Jomon period. However, detailed data of the associated mortuary practices are not known except for the stone arrangements or a few other funerary items. In this paper the author compares Japanese Haiseki-bo to similar graves of Mongolia, Siberia and Alaska, and studies mortuary practices on the basis of Japanese and Chinese classical documents. The author supposes that mortuary custom of erecting a but , over the burial dates back to the Jomon period.
