Recently archaeozoological studies make clear the pig-breeding of the Okhotsk Culture of the Northern Hokkaido. Many bone artifacts, which are similar to hoes in form, are found in these sites. The analyses of these artifacts indicate they cultivated millets with these artifacts, which is supported by the ethnological and historical data. . The Okhotsk Culture of the Northern Hokkaido is characterized by pig-breeding, millet-cultivation and fishing. On, the other hand, the Okhotsk Culture of the Eastern Hokkaido is characterized by sea-mammal hunting.
