Phototherapy has been widely empolyed to prevent kernicterus for the treatment of hyperbilirubinemic infants. While, the amino acids, especially tryptophan, phenylalanine, methionine, histidine and tyrosine are known to be photosensitive substances. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of phototherapy on metabolism of the amino acids in neonatal hyperbilirubinemic infants treated with phototherapy. 1. The analysis of the amounts of tryptophan, serotonine and 5-hydroxyindoleaceticacid was performed by reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography using a two step gradient. In vitro study revealed that these substances in the urine decreased by photoirradiation with riboflavin. On the other hand, the urinary excretion of these compounds were not influenced by phototherapy in the infants with hyperbilirubinemia. 2. The amounts of plasma tryptophan, methionine, histidine and cystine reduced by the photoirradiation with 10 μg/ml of riboflavin. The concentrations of plasma taurine, phenylalanine and histidine in hyperbilirubinemic infants decreased at 48 hours of phototherapy and at 24 hours after treatment, they reached the values befpre treatment. These data indicates that it is impoitant to avoid an over-exposure at the phototherapy in the hyperbilirubinemic infants.
