L-Methyl lactate methacrylate (1) was obtained in high yield by reaction of L-methyl lactate and methacrylic anhydride in the presense of 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine. Radical polymerization of 1 was carried out with 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile as a initiator. The polymerization reactivity of 1 was high and polymer was obtained in high yield. Gelation was occured during the polymerization in higher monomer concentration, and the polymer obtained was insoluble or swollen in any organic solvents and water. In lower monomer concentration, polymer soluble in various organic solvent was obtained. Number average molecular weight (M_n) and weight average molecular weight (M_w) of the polymer samples were estimated by gel permeation chromatography. The M_w/M_n values were about 2 indicating the polydispersity of the polymer samples.
