We investigated the distribution of the species of Taraxacum in the area of Takayama City by referring to its native and naturalized species in comparison. A native species, T. albidum vegetative in warm climate, was seen growing at no more than two places, and we confirmed this was an artificial occurrence by some resident who brought the plants of this species from some other warmer place in Gifu Prefecture. According to Kitamura's System (1957), the native species of T. japonicum, T. elatum, T. longeappendiculatum, and T. hondoenses are distingushed from each other in terms of quantitative charcters of capitulum. Capitulaum characters of the Taraxacum species growing around Takayama, however, are never conspicuous and difficult to identify becouse of their varied forms of character (Figs 2, 3, 4, 5). Thus we could say the captulam characters are mere morpholigical differences of one species, and the classification of those four species does not make sense. We would like call this area of Takayama a transitional zone, where the capitulum characters prove to represent an adaptive process of Taraxacum species. Two naturalized species, T. officinale and T. laevigatum, were observed to thrive in the area. Most of these plants are dominant in the central part of the city and it the recectly developed housing areas, whereas the native plants of Taraxacum were generally found in the fields of the outskirts of the city. On the whole, we can say those distributional characters are correlated with the degrees of destruction of nature, or the conservation of nature; the naturalized species where nature has been highly demolished and the native species where nature has been well preserved. This hypothesis is viable in the light of environmentalist discussions.
