On flax-fiber formation in various sowing period was studies. Seeds were sown on every 1st, 11th, and 21st of the monthes from Feb. 11 to Aug. 11. The development in the internode between the cotyledon node and the first branching node of the stem was examined microscopically at the harvest time. Our investigation made into 16 plots, eliminated the Feb. 11, Aug. 1, Aug. 11-seeding plots, as the former's individuals all died from frost damage and the later's imatured, shows: 1. The diameter of flax stem tends to decrease as the seed is sown later, whereas the thickness of phloem once lessenning in accord with stem diameter, increases again in May 21-plot and in later plots gradually: i. e. phloem thickness appears proportional to the growing period of flax. 2. The number of fiber-cell bundles of flax in a section in the middle of stem is in the plots sown till May 11 found the greater as the earier sowing in practiced. Its variation can scarcely by seen in later plots. As to the number of fiber-cells in a fiber-cell bundle the same is also said in case of the plots sown till May 11, while in later plots the number increases ratter the large as the later sowing occurs. 3. Fiber-cell bundles in early planted plots develop fully in phloem, being regular in arrangements, they have the more irregular shapes, their cell occupying the less portion of phloem, as sowing delays. In early plots fiber-cell are angular and arranged with little cellular space, while they become round in later plots. 4. Diameters of fiber-cell are relatively small in May 11-plot to Apr. 21-plot measuring about 31μ, in other plots, however, they measure about 34μ. Lumen of fiber-cells increase in volume as sowing date goes forward till May 11, but they show insignificant increase thereafter. In addition to these phenomena, fiber-cell membrane is perceived thinner with the delay of sowing. This shows that the earlier showing secures the better quality of flax fiber. 5.
