The Meiji era was the starting point of the Japanese economic and social modernization. The administration of modern statistics was also begun at the beginning of this era. In this paper two themes are taken up, the first is the research of the statistics for the textile industry in Osaka prefecture and the whole of Japan between the Meiji and Taisyo eras (1870's-1920's). The second is the research of the regional character of the textile industry in Osaka prefecture between the Meiji and Taisyo eras by analyzing statistics. The format of statistics for the cotton fabrics and weaving indusrty was provided by the Department of Agriculture and Commerce of the central government. The basic style of statistics was changed time and again from 1883 to 1921 following the growth of the industry. But the local government of Osaka prefecture provided the more detailed format because of the development of the cotton textile industry in Osaka. There are three regional divisions in Osaka prefecture, Settsu, Izumi and Kawachi. Settsu is located in the northern part of the prefecture, and has 4 counties including the city of Osaka. The city of Osaka was the largest new center of the modern cotton textile industry which had the large spinning companies in Japan. But the northern part of the prefecture excluding the city of Osaka and its surrounding had few manufacturing products. Izumi and Kawachi were the old production centers of cotton textile since 1700's (the Edo era). Though the cotton textile industry was stagnated in Kawachi which was located in the central part of the prefecture at the end of the Edo era, Izumi which was located in the southern part of the prefecture and had 2 counties (Senboku County and Sennan County) developed the largest cotton textile center in Japan between 1900's-1920's with a large number of small and medium factories. In Osaka the main products were the bleached cotton goods, which were of two types, one was the broad type of cloth which was mainly manufactured by the large factories of the big firms in the city of Osaka, the other was the native type of cloth which was mainly produced in the countryside of Izumi and Kawachi. Other types of cotton goods were also produced in every division or county, that is, the striped goods, dyed goods, cotton flannel, towelling, and others.
