The structure and distribution of myoepithlial cells in the rat parotid, submandibular and sublingual glands were investigated by SEM and the whole mount alkaline phosphatase histochemistry. Myoepithelial cells were found to be well developed around the sublingual acini. Although myoepithelial cells have been suggested to provide the egestive force for the saliva secretion, the volume of sublingual acini was almost unchanged after the secretory stimulation. It was suggested that the major function of myoepithelial cells in salivary secretion is the support for the acinar structure rather than the active egestion.
